You get paid a small amount everytime someone looks at your page. These aren't huge amount, usually only $0.01 or $0.02 per visitor, but if you have several of these ads and your site is getting 10s of thousands of visitors a month, it adds up quickly. Other advertisers will place an ad on your site and give you a comission of anything that is bought by people that go to the advertisers site through yours. So somebody is browsing your site, clicks on the ad, ends up making a purchase and you get a percentage of the sale.
