Wordpress is still the best blogging software. It is easiest to use with lots of free plugins and themes. Another blogging software you can try is Joomla. It is a little more complicated then Wordpress but you may find it has the features you need.

I recently switched from Serendipity to WordPress but you can find a list of free blogs at http://php.opensourcecms.com/scripts/show.php?catid=2&cat=Blogs and you can also log in to them to see what they are like.
